WHAT’S RIGHT, MALAYSIA?

YOU DECIDE

Apa khabar? Hope you are staying safe out there as heavy downpours are expected along the East Coast region. Having said that, caretaker Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri stated that it’s up to the EC to decide whether or not to call off the elections in places hit by floods. So, there is a small chance that some of us may need to swim to vote.
Don’t tell us we didn’t warn.

Conflict of interest, legal or not?
The Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) stated that having Yeo Bee Yin contest in Puchong is concerning due to her ties with IOI Group Berhad – which could arise in conflicts of interest.

However, the party’s secretary has come forward to state that the IOI Group’s properties are not located in the constituent Yeo will be contesting.

C4 is an advocacy centre that monitors and exposes corruption in the government. Currently, there are no laws that govern conflict of interests. There is a strong need for a law to govern this as well as the need to declare assets prior to standing for elections (covered below).
Should all candidates declare their assets?
Rafizi Ramli recently declared his assets and urged all PKR candidates to do the same. Following this, Khairy made a comment suggesting that asset declarations are best done when they’re appointed to the cabinet.

Is there a law governing the declaration of assets? As stated above, these are things the new government will have to focus on once they come into power post elections. Having a law governing these would ensure transparency and promote trust in these ministers.
Undi18 – Youngsters are allowed to vote, but they lack the education
In a recent video interview by SAYS, we noticed that many of the younger folks seem to not know much about how the political system in Malaysia works, and some, seem to not be reading the news. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Voting is your constitutional right. Express it.
2. Politics may be annoying, but it moulds your future. To put it simply, if you want better currency against SGD, vote!
3. Anti-party hoping law is in force, so don’t worry about your MPs jumping ship as Azmin Ali did.

Information these days is just a Google search away, don’t be a ‘frog under the coconut shell.’

What is ‘undi rosak’?
Don’t deny yourself of your own constitutional right. Every election, we come across news on ‘undi rosak’. Undi rosak happens when a voter fails to ‘vote correctly’. As a voter, the best way would be to make a cross (pangkah, not salib) sign inside the box next to the party logo of your choice, however, there are 39 ways here on how you can mark your ballot paper.

Just remember to NOT:

1. Have multiple markings on more than one candidate name or logo.
2. Vote on ballot paper with no SPR official stamp.
3. Draw on your ballot paper (this is a democracy, but behave).

If you fail to do it right, your vote will not count. Imagine lining up for about an hour under the sun or rain (or maybe even swimming across the flood) just to have your vote rejected. Don’t be that guy and don’t let your parents be that guy. Start training now!
We declare ‘guy’ to be gender-neutral.
